Amazon Announces Three New Ultra-cheap Kindles

Amazon’s Jeff Bezos today took to the stage at a press conference to unveil not one but three brand new cheap-as-chips Kindle ereaders. We all know that the company is also launching a Kindle tablet today, but for those of us that can’t get past our love of eInk displays, Amazon is not leaving us behind.

The new line of Kindles starts at $79 with the new entry-level Kindle representing a refresh from the old Kindle 3. Measuring in at less than six ounces and 18 percent smaller than the old model (just the body, the display is still a 6-inch job), this one has just three buttons and sports a sleek and sexy design. While it’s not immediately clear, it seems this model will be a Kindle + Special Offers deal. You might remember when the. If not, it’s basically a heavily discounted, ad-supported Kindle. The ads on the new Special Offer Kindle are local and classy, appearing as unimposing screensavers, so don’t worry about your reading being interrupted by annoying pop-ups.

While a $79 Kindle is certainly something to write home about, Amazon announced two more new additions to the Kindle line and these definitely have us excited. The Kindle Touch and Kindle Touch 3G are exactly what they say they are: Touchscreen Kindles. With an IR touch system and 6-inch displays, users tap the left side of the screen to go back a page, the middle for the menu, and the right side of the screen to go to the next page. The Kindle Touch and Touch 3G also come with a new X-Ray feature designed to make reading more … interactive, we suppose. Tapping a page will bring up facts about what’s happening in the book you’re reading. The example given during today’s demo was a Wikipedia article on the Versailles Treaty, because the book being read was the post-war novel ‘Remains of the Day.’ This book-specific information is apparently downloaded with the book, meaning you don’t tap the page and ending up waiting an age for whatever Wikipedia article Amazon feels is relevant to load.

Software Organizes Your Videos Using Face Detection

LAS VEGAS – Using facial recognition to tag people in photos is child’s play for tech these days, with most photo sharing and social media sites detecting and offering to tag your friends automatically. Doing the same detection for videos is a bit more complicated, but AMD is on the case, showing off beta software that can help you organize and search your clips based on who is in them.

At AMD’s CES 2015 suite, executive Richard Gayle demonstrated the application which has been tentatively named ‘AMD Content Manager,’ and its ability to find faces in a group of local videos he had stored. The upper left corner of the application showed a list of faces that it had detected in the video collection. Some of these faces had names already attached to them and others were marked as unknown. After clicking on the listing for a person named Darrell, Gayle was able to rename the person, add keyword tags to his profile and see the faces of people have been in videos with him.

He then dragged Darrell’s icon and a few other people’s icons into a search box, along with the keyword ‘amd.’ A single video, which contained all of those faces and was tagged AMD, appeared. But if there had been multiple videos that met that criteria, we would have seen them.

When Gayle selected the video, a player opened in the right window pane, with a timeline and a list of face icons of people in the clip in the space below it. The timeline had different colored boxes to represent the moment in the video when each person first appeared. When he clicked on one of those boxes, the player jumped to that portion of the clip. This would be very useful if you have a 10 minute clip with lots of speakers, but you just want to see the 2 minutes in which your friend Susan appeared.

Gayle also said that the program allows you to do some basic editing, based on its facial recognition. For example, you could compile a montage of all of Darrell’s appearances and save it as a single video.

AMD probably won’t release Content Manager in its current form, Gayle said, but will instead seek to license it to OEMs who can rebrand it before putting it on their systems. He also said that only AMD chips offer the type of processing power necessary to run this application, because of the chips’ HSA (Heterogeneous System Architecture) or ability to have the CPU, GPU and memory controller work closely together.

Whatever form it takes, this technology shows a lot of promise.

YouTube Music and YouTube Premium Finally Launch

Oct. 9 Update: Google’s giving 6 fee months of YouTube Premium with the.

would change from a music video-focused app to a streaming service meant to compete with, and YouTube Red was to become.

  • MORE: Read our guide on how to

But as of May 30, I still saw ‘Red’ when I opened YouTube (I pay for YouTube Red/Premium), and I still got a ‘The new YouTube Music is coming soon’ when I try to open it in my browser. On June 18, though, both services launched at a wider scale.

noted ‘Today, we’re excited to start rolling out early access of the new YouTube Music in the U.S., Mexico, Australia, New Zealand and South Korea.’

So, it’s a staggered rollout. While these are all-too-common in tech today for new features in apps, it feels odd for a major new service to see the same vague release schedule.

Why are we so excited to test these services out? I’m looking forward to seeing how well YouTube’s video library can be integrated into the app, as neither Apple nor Spotify do this well.

Also, I’ve long been a proponent of Google Play Music, the predecessor to YouTube Music, because it did such a good job with letting you upload your own songs to the cloud (something Spotify doesn’t do). While that feature won’t be available at launch,.

Microsoft Acquires Skype for $8.4 Billion

It’s been just over two years since Skype and its old parent company eBay parted ways and it certainly wasted no time in finding a new buyer. Microsoft and Skype today announced a deal that would see the former acquire Skype from investor group Silver Lake for $8.5 billion in cash. We don’t need to tell you that $8.5 billion is a significant amount of cash, but as a price for Skype, it’s also going to shock a lot of people.

You see, in 2005, the company was sold to eBay for $2.6 billion, a price eBay felt was more than fair for a popular but still relatively small service that was expected to explode at any moment. Unfortunately for both companies, the partnership didn’t quite work out as planned. Skype grew, but slowly, and eBay didn’t really seem to know what to do with it. In April of 2008, just three years after its big purchase, eBay’s president and CEO John Donahoe said it would spend a year evaluating Skype before making any decisions about the company’s future.

Fast forward a year and eBay announces plans to separate from Skype. In November of 2009, the online auction site sold Skype for approximately $1.9 billion in cash and a note from the buyer, Silver Lake Partners, in the principal amount of $125 million.reports that Skype filed IPO plans in August of 2010 and expected to raise $1 billion (its revenue in 2010 was $860 million). However, IPO plans were put on the backburner soon after the company’s new CEO, Tony Bates, was hired. That brings us to today’s deal, which has already been approved by both boards of directors. Skype will become a new business division within Microsoft, and Tony Bates will assume the title of president of the Microsoft Skype Division, reporting directly to Ballmer.

With a company like Microsoft behind it, Skype has huge potential and, unlike eBay, it seems Redmond is excited to mix the service up with existing products and services. The press release sent out this morning indicated that Skype would support an array of Microsoft devices, including Xbox, Kinect, Windows Phone 7 phones and Windows computers. For its part, Microsoft will connect users with Xbox Live, Outlook and Lync, among others.

‘Skype is a phenomenal service that is loved by millions of people around the world,’ said Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer. ‘Together we will create the future of real-time communications so people can easily stay connected to family, friends, clients and colleagues anywhere in the world.’

Lenovo Smartphone Concept Boasts Interactive Projector

BEIJING—Lenovo’s new smartphone concept is taking the idea of a phablet to a whole new level. Shown off today at Lenovo Tech World, this smartphone features a built-in pico projector and laser sensors, which not only let you project your smartphone’s display onto a larger surface, but interact with it as well.

While the idea of a phone with a projector isn’t exactly new–Samsung came out with a similar device a few years ago–and there have been virtual laser keyboards for even longer–Lenovo’s concept, called Smart Cast, combines the two into one device.

While still in development, Smart Cast can recognize several gestures, including clicking, swiping, and multitouch, so you can interact with your smartphone as you would on its display. The projector on the phone can also rotate so it can be used to display images on a wall for presentations and movies. A small kickstand on the back of the phone lets it stand up on its own, so you don’t have to prop it up against something else.

At Lenovo Tech World, the smartphone was demonstrated by the pianist Lang Lang, who used the technology first to project a virtual keyboard onto a table, where he played Scott Joplin’s The Entertainer. Next, used the projector to show sheet music above a piano, and swiped between pages as he played a classical piece on the piano. In both cases, the phone was very responsive, as Lang played effortlessly, with no lag at all.

  • BlizzCon 2021 is cancelled

Bad news, everyone: BlizzCon is cancelled. Again.

That’s right, Blizzard has confirmed that there will be no in-person BlizzCon 2021, just like the convention was cancelled in 2020 too.

Instead, fans should look forward to a smaller online event, set to take place in early 2022.

    Why was BlizzCon 2021 cancelled?

In case you couldn’t guess, this year’s convention, which normally takes place every autumn, was cancelled due to the ongoing Covid pandemic.

‘The ongoing complexities and uncertainties of the pandemic have impacted our ability to properly move forward on many of these fronts, and ultimately we’re now past the point where we’d be able to develop the kind of event we’d want to create for you in November,’ explained Saralyn Smith, executive producer of BlizzCon, on.

    What about BlizzCon 2022?

We’re not sure yet if next November will see a full BlizzCon 2022 or not.

What we do know is that a smaller online and in-person event will take place earlier in the year, presumably as a direct follow-up to this February’s BlizzConline 2021.

‘We’re planning a global event for the early part of next year, combining an online show along the lines of our recent BlizzConline with smaller in-person gatherings, and we’ll share more as our plans come together,’ Smith wrote.

What to expect from BlizzConline 2022

BlizzConline 2021 ran across five separate tracks – World of Warcraft, Hearthstone, Diablo, Overwatch, and Strategy – and we’d expect a similar structure to next year’s event.

Diablo 4 and Overwatch 2 are likely to dominate the event, as neither is likely to launch before the show kicks off.

Expect online panels and discussions streamed worldwide for free, though we’re not sure what the ‘smaller in-person gatherings’ will entail.

How to download all photos and videos from Google Photos

If you’re panicking about how to save those photos you’ve stacked up since 2012, fear not. There is a way to save them all in one go. Unfortunately, Google doesn’t make it entirely obvious how to do this, which is where we come in.

Whether you want to back up all your images, or migrate to another cloud storage service, here’s how to batch download all your photos and videos from Google.

In this article, we’ll look at how to download multiple photos or videos from Google Photos as well as how to download everything from Google Photos, straight to your PC hard drive.

Though Google’s unlimited photo storage has now ended, it’s worth noting that Google won’t have deleted your photos and videos after 1 June. They’ll still be there and available to view. The change is simply that any photos and videos you upload after that date will count against your quota, even in High Quality.

How to download multiple photos from Google Photos

This is the simpler task of the two, and the process is the same whether you’re downloading photos or videos from Google Photos.

    • First head toand click on the tick mark on top left corner on the photos or videos you want to download. Hold down Shift and click further down in the photo roll if you want to select multiple photos at once.
    • Click on the three dots at the top right and click Download (or use Shift + D).
    • Your download should begin.

Downloading all your photos from Google Drive is a lot less straightforward.

If you tried to download all your images using the method above, you’d have noticed there’s no way to batch download everything directly within Google Phones (we don’t know why either). Instead, you’ll have to head to.

Google Takeout lets you download any data from your Google account – whether that’s your Chrome history, Google Play activity, Google Play Books, Hangouts history, or Google Photos.

    • Head toand click Deselect all – this ensures you’re not downloading your entire Google history

    • Scroll down the list and select Google Photos.
    • Click on ‘All photo albums included’ to download only specific albums from Google Photos.

Note: If you haven’t separated all your pictures into albums (because who has time for that?), Google will automatically separate them by year.

    • Once you’re happy with your selections click OK.

    • Scroll to the bottom of all the services and select Next Step.

    • In the export settings that follow, you can choose how often you want to download all your Google Photo content.

    • You can also specify whether you want the final exported zipped file to be emailed to you, or sent to another cloud storage option. We’ll stick to an email link in this case.

    Also see:

    • At this stage, you can also select how large you want each exported zip file to be. The default setting is 2GB, and the maximum size is 50GB. Keep in mind, exports larger than 2GB will be compressed in zip64 files. Google warns this may not be supported by older systems, so you may needto unzip your exports.
    • Click Create Export when you’re ready.

    • Your files will now begin exporting. You may need to wait a few minutes depending on how large your whole collection is. You can also choose to cancel at this point.

    • Once the export is complete, you’ll be able to download your photos by clicking on Show Exports.

    • You can now download each exported zip folder to your hard drive. Note: the download link expires after one week.

    • If you opted for an email notification, you can also download the exports directly from your Gmail inbox.

    • Also note, you should get a security authorization email from Google to confirm it’s you requesting to export your photos and not someone else. You may need to authorize it before you’re able to download your photos and videos.
